What does accredited compressor and condensing unit testing include?

The refrigeration compressor drives the working-fluid circuit — raising suction pressure and delivering vapour to the condenser. Laboratory measurement of Q0, P and COP verifies manufacturer declarations, supports system optimisation and documents performance for market requirements.

COCH Kraków operates specialist test benches under PCA AB 308 accreditation (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) with ILAC MRA recognition. The accredited displacement range is 5–30 m³/h for single-stage refrigeration compressors (PN-EN 13771-1) and condensing units (PN-EN 13771-2).

We measure cooling capacity by Methods A, C and E (compressors) or A and E (units), and drive power by direct measurement. Results feed catalogue data sheets, CE / Ecodesign files and OEM comparative testing.

All measuring equipment is calibrated and metrologically traceable. Tests reproduce controlled temperature and pressure conditions representative of real operation.

Refrigeration compressor testing — cooling capacity measurement per PN-EN 13771

Scope of testing

Accredited measurements of cooling capacity, drive power and COP for compressors and condensing units per PN-EN 13771.

According to the PCA AB 308 scope, we determine cooling capacity and drive power of single-stage refrigeration compressors and condensing units with displacement from 5 to 30 m³/h.

Cooling capacity (Q0)

Measurement of refrigerating capacity under defined evaporation and condensation conditions — Methods A, C and E per PN-EN 13771-1; Methods A and E per PN-EN 13771-2.

Drive power (P)

Direct measurement of electrical power drawn by the compressor or condensing unit under stabilised operating points.

COP & energy performance

Coefficient of Performance COP = Q0 / P for compressors and complete condensing units — comparable catalogue and Ecodesign documentation.

Displacement range 5–30 m³/h

Accredited scope covers single-stage refrigeration compressors and condensing units with compressor displacement from 5 to 30 m³/h.

PN-EN 13771-1 — compressors

Performance testing of refrigeration compressors: cooling capacity, drive power and derived efficiency indicators under controlled refrigerant conditions.

PN-EN 13771-2 — condensing units

Performance testing of air-cooled and water-cooled condensing units: unit cooling capacity, drive power and system COP.

Hermetic, semi-hermetic and open types

Tests cover hermetic, semi-hermetic and open compressors used in commercial refrigeration, cold rooms, ice makers and HVAC applications.

Safety & reliability checks

Assessment of control and protective accessories, operational stability and compliance-oriented risk review supporting manufacturer documentation.

Compressor condensing unit diagram

Schematic of a compressor condensing unit with main components marked.

Condensing unit — key components

  • Compressor with control, regulating and protective accessories
  • Shut-off valves and oil separator (reciprocating / rotary)
  • Drive motor, coupling or belt drive
  • Condenser and liquid refrigerant receiver
  • Liquid-line dryer; optional regenerative heat exchanger

Condenser cooling types

Air-cooled condenser

Forced or gravity airflow — common in smaller commercial units.

Water-cooled condenser

Used in larger systems with higher refrigerating capacity.

How does compressor testing proceed?

From inquiry and bench preparation to stabilised EN 13771 measurements and the accredited report.

Frequently asked questions

PN-EN 13771 scope, COP, displacement range, unit types and how to request a quote.

PN-EN 13771 is the European standard for performance testing of refrigeration compressors (Part 1) and condensing units (Part 2). It defines methods for measuring cooling capacity (Q0), drive power (P) and COP under controlled refrigerant and temperature conditions. Results support catalogue sheets, CE / Ecodesign documentation and OEM comparisons. COCH performs accredited tests under both parts within the PCA AB 308 scope.

Accreditation AB 308 – PCA & ILAC MRA

COCH Kraków is the only body in Poland authorised to issue ATP certificates. PCA accreditation AB 308 with ILAC MRA recognition guarantees international acceptance of all test reports and certificates.
