What is the F-Gas Category I training?

Over 50 years of COCH expertise in industrial refrigeration and air conditioning - now delivered as certified training.

F-Gas Category I training prepares participants to service stationary refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment containing fluorinated greenhouse gases — with no charge-size restriction — and for the UDT/AGH certification exam.

F-Gas Category I training is a two-day course that prepares participants for the certification exam authorising work on stationary equipment containing fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases). Category I is the broadest authorisation - with no restrictions on system charge size.

Training takes place at the modern COCH training centre at ul. Juliusza Lea 116 in Kraków. It combines theory with hands-on workshop practice on real refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. Participants receive study materials, meals, and access to free parking.

A place on the course is secured by prepayment at least 3 working days before the start date. Study materials and meals are included in the course fee. The certification exam is held at AGH - the exam fee is paid separately directly to the university.

Who is this training for?

The training is designed for persons working in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry who install, maintain or service refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment containing F-gases.

Course programme – what does the training cover?

Two-day Category I F-gas training: from regulations and refrigeration theory to hands-on work on real refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems – preparing for the UDT F-gas certificate exam.

Theoretical module

  • Design and operation of refrigeration equipment

Compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion devices and controls in stationary refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump equipment – component functions and safe operation.

  • Inspection of refrigeration systems

Checks before start-up, after long shutdown and after repair: visual inspection, leak checking, equipment records and entries in the Polish Central Register of Operators (CRO).

  • Environmentally responsible system management

Preventing fluorinated greenhouse gas emissions, recovery instead of venting, handling cylinders and waste in line with environmental regulations.

  • Thermodynamics in refrigeration

The vapour-compression cycle on the log p-h chart, saturation pressure and temperature, superheat and subcooling – the basis for assessing and diagnosing system operation.

  • Environmental impact of refrigerants

GWP and ODP, HFC refrigerants (e.g. R404A, R410A, R32), HFOs and natural refrigerants (R290, R744/CO₂). F-gas restrictions and bans under Regulation (EU) 2024/573.

  • Refrigeration standards and regulations

The Polish F-gas Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/573, EN 378 and the obligations of certified personnel and companies installing, maintaining and servicing F-gas equipment.

  • Brazing techniques and vibration protection

Hard brazing of copper pipes with nitrogen purge, detachable joints, pipe supports and vibration eliminators that reduce the risk of cracks and refrigerant leaks.

Practical module

  • Making and testing pipework

Cutting, bending, flaring and brazing copper pipes in training groups, and checking joint quality before the tightness test.

  • Leak checking

Direct and indirect methods: electronic leak detectors, bubble solutions and analysis of operating parameters. Recording leak checks in the equipment log.

  • Pressure testing

Nitrogen pressure test, evacuation and vacuum hold check, emptying the system and recording results.

  • Recovery of refrigerants and oils

Recovering refrigerant into cylinders with a recovery unit, weighing cylinder fill, draining oil and preparing refrigerant and oil for disposal.

What are F-gases? (EU Reg. 517/2014)

Fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). Used as refrigerants in AC, refrigeration and heat pumps. Under EU Regulation 517/2014, only persons holding a valid F-gas certificate (Category I–IV) are authorised to handle such equipment - Category I being the broadest with no system charge restriction.

Why us?
