Why manufacturers must test machine noise

Accredited sound power and sound pressure measurements for manufacturers and importers who must declare noise levels and demonstrate outdoor equipment compliance on the EU market.

One of the responsibilities of manufacturers and importers is to place only safe products on the EU market. Under Directive 2006/42/EC, the manufacturer or importer must inform users in the instruction manual about the noise levels emitted by machines.

Another obligation for machinery placed on the EU market is to demonstrate compliance with Directive 2000/14/EC on noise emission by equipment for use outdoors.

COCH is a PCA-accredited testing laboratory (AB 308, ILAC MRA) performing individual tests according to international standards — mainly to determine sound pressure and/or sound power levels.

  • Accredited LWA and LpA measurements (ISO 3744 / 3746 / 3747).
  • Product standards PN-EN 12102-1 and PN-EN 12102-2 for HVACR equipment.
  • Acoustic parameter support for HP KEYMARK certification.
  • Independent verification of declared noise values in product documentation.

Scope of testing & standards

Measurements performed at Laboratory AB 308 using engineering and survey methods — products, parameters and applied standards.

Devices we test acoustically

  • Air conditioners, liquid chillers, heat pumps, process chillers and dehumidifiers with electrically driven compressors
  • Air conditioners, liquid chillers and heat pumps for space heating and cooling
  • Heat pump water heaters
  • Condensing units and fans
  • Household appliances
  • Other industrial machines and equipment

Parameters we determine

  • Noise emitted by the machine at the operator’s station and in the work space (sound pressure)
  • Calculation of the machine’s sound power level
  • Noise emitted by household appliances
  • Sound power level of noise sources using intensity probes

We provide independent measurements of noise parameters given in the manufacturer’s promotional materials (e.g. mandatory product cards). We can also support manufacturers with development tests to optimise product settings.

Sound power level (LWA)

Determination of A-weighted sound power using engineering and survey methods per PN-EN ISO 3744, 3746 and 3747.

Emission sound pressure (LpA)

Noise at the operator station and in the work space — required for machinery documentation and workplace assessment.

Heat pump & HVACR acoustics

Acoustic testing of air conditioners, liquid chillers, heat pumps, process chillers and dehumidifiers with electrically driven compressors.

HP KEYMARK noise parameter

Noise measured under defined operating conditions as a key parameter for HP KEYMARK certification of heat pumps.

Heat pump water heaters

Sound power determination for heat pump water heaters according to PN-EN 12102-2.

Household appliances (DHA)

Noise emission measurements for household appliances within the accredited laboratory scope.

Intensity probe method

Sound power level of noise sources determined with intensity probes where applicable.

Measurement range 30–136 dB

A-weighted sound pressure and calculated sound power across the laboratory measurement range 30–136 dB.
