Who is this training for?

Acquire the qualification required for legal and safe operation of filling portable pressure vessels with a capacity over 350 cm³ with fluorinated greenhouse gases.

Filling portable pressure vessels (such as refrigerant cylinders) with liquefied gases requires a qualification certificate issued by the Office of Technical Supervision (UDT). Statutory regulations impose this obligation on all technicians performing recovery and cylinder filling in the HVAC/R industry. Our one-day preparatory course at COCH Kraków provides comprehensive theoretical and practical preparation and coordination of the state examination.

This training is designed for individuals filling portable pressure vessels with a capacity exceeding 350 cm³ and operating temperatures from -20°C to +50°C with liquefied and compressed gases (fluorinated greenhouse gases and controlled substances). Participants learn how to safely operate cylinders and filling stations to avoid risks to life, health, and the environment.

The curriculum combines theoretical lectures with intensive practical workshops at professionally prepared COCH training stations. Participants learn, among other things, how to interpret markings on cylinders, verify their technical condition, connect installations, monitor filling parameters, and perform safe transport and storage procedures.

Course Target Audience

This training is aimed primarily at installers, mechanics, and service technicians of refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump systems who, as part of their daily professional duties, recover refrigerants into cylinders or fill pressure vessels. It is also an essential step for service companies seeking full compliance with UDT regulations and environmental protection laws.

Training Curriculum – What is Covered?

An intensive 1-day program combining theoretical lectures with practical workshops led by experienced COCH engineers.

Theoretical Section (Lectures)

  • Technical Supervision Regulations

Standards, legal requirements, and executive acts concerning the filling, storage, and supervision of portable pressure cylinders.

  • Physicochemical Properties of Gases

Characteristics of fluorinated greenhouse gases, saturation pressure, density, filling ratios, and hazards associated with cylinder overfilling.

  • Design & Accessories of Vessels

Design of double-valve and single-valve cylinders, design of safety valves, shut-off valves, seals, and siphons.

  • Marking of Portable Vessels

Interpretation of stamps and engravings on the cylinder, cylinder color-coding according to gas type, nameplates.

  • H&S and Fire Safety Rules

Personal protective equipment, procedures in case of leakage or fire, first aid for frostbite.

Practical Section (Workshops)

  • Cylinder Condition Assessment

Identifying mechanical damage, corrosion, verifying the validity of periodic inspection tests (UDT certification), and valve operations.

  • Step-by-Step Filling Procedure

Connecting cylinders to recovery/filling stations, operating electronic scales, monitoring pressure and temperature.

  • Calculating Allowable Filling Weight

Practical calculations of refrigerant weight based on water capacity of the cylinder and the filling factor for the given gas.

  • Labeling and Tagging Filled Cylinders

Selection and correct placement of warning labels containing information on gas type and mass in accordance with the F-gas regulation.

No scans accepted: The UDT categorically rejects scans of traditionally signed documents. A simple printout of a scan will prevent you from taking the exam.
Deadlines: The complete documentation (application + power of attorney + exam fee payment) must be delivered to COCH at least 2 weeks before the planned exam date.
Candidate requirements: At least 18 years of age and holding a preparatory training certificate (which we issue at the end of the course).

What is the UDT Exam Like?

A two-stage assessment of qualifications before inspectors of the Office of Technical Supervision.

The state exam takes place immediately after the training at the COCH headquarters in Kraków. It consists of two independent parts, both of which must be passed:

UDT Pressure Vessel Filler Permit - legal base

A qualification certificate for the filling of portable pressure equipment is issued by the Office of Technical Supervision (UDT) in Poland. It confirms competence under technical safety standards and authorizes safe handling and filling of portable gas cylinders. Highly essential in the HVAC sector for any refrigerant recovery operations.

01

Theoretical Part (Oral)

A discussion with the examination commission. The candidate draws a question set: 2 general questions (minimum 1 pass required) and 3 specialized questions on the gas group (minimum 2 passes required).

02

Practical Part (On-Station Exam)

Performing portable cylinder filling. The inspector assesses: cylinder condition evaluation, connection correctness, filling weight monitoring, compliance with H&S rules, and proper tagging of the filled cylinder.

03

Issuance of UDT Credentials

Upon passing the exam, the Office of Technical Supervision issues an official, plastic qualification certificate authorizing the filling of portable pressure vessels. Credentials are valid indefinitely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about the portable cylinder filling training? Check the answers below.

No. The F-gas certificate is an environmental protection requirement (under EU Regulation 517/2014 and local F-gas acts) designed to prevent greenhouse gas emissions. The cylinder filling permit is a UDT safety requirement concerning technical operation of high-pressure equipment (cylinders), protecting from explosions and H&S hazards. For recovering refrigerants into recovery cylinders, the law requires holding both documents simultaneously.
