What is Module A2 under Directive 2014/68/EU?

Module A2 is a conformity assessment procedure in which the manufacturer fulfils the obligations in Directive 2014/68/EU and ensures, on its sole responsibility, that the pressure equipment meets the applicable requirements.

The Notified Body performs supervised checks to verify the quality of internal final assessments. COCH Kraków acts as EU Notified Body No. 1462 and holds PCA inspection body accreditation AK 044 (EN ISO/IEC 17020).

Inspection services cover conformity assessment under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). We specialise in Module A2 inspections — internal production control plus supervised checks of pressure equipment at random intervals — from technical documentation review through product tests to detailed inspection reports.

What does Module A2 cover?

Key elements of the Module A2 conformity assessment procedure for category II pressure equipment.

Technical documentation

The manufacturer prepares documentation enabling conformity assessment, including risk analysis and, as far as needed for assessment, design, manufacture and operation of the pressure equipment.

Production control

The manufacturer takes all measures so that the manufacturing process and its monitoring ensure conformity of manufactured pressure equipment with the technical documentation and Directive 2014/68/EU.

Final assessment & random visits

The manufacturer performs final assessment monitored through unannounced visits by the notified body, which examines products at irregular intervals to verify the quality of internal checks.

CE marking & EU Declaration of Conformity

After successful assessment the manufacturer affixes CE marking and the NB identification number, draws up the EU DoC and keeps it with the technical file for 10 years after placing on the market.

Technical documentation — minimum contents

Where applicable, the technical documentation contains at least the following elements:

  • General description of the pressure equipment
  • Conceptual design and manufacturing drawings and diagrams of components, sub-assemblies, circuits, etc.
  • Descriptions and explanations necessary for understanding those drawings and diagrams and the operation of the pressure equipment
  • A list of harmonized standards applied in full or in part, and descriptions of solutions adopted to meet the essential safety requirements where those harmonized standards have not been applied; partly applied standards must be indicated
  • Results of design calculations made, examinations carried out, etc.
  • Test reports

During unannounced visits the notified body:

  • Ensures that the manufacturer actually performs the final assessment in accordance with Annex I point 3.2 PED
  • Takes samples of pressure equipment at production or storage premises for control purposes and decides whether all or part of the final assessment test must be carried out

The objective of sampling is to determine whether the production process stays within acceptable limits ensuring conformity. In case of non-conformity the notified body takes appropriate measures. The manufacturer, under the responsibility of the notified body, affixes the NB identification number during manufacturing.

CE marking and EU Declaration of Conformity

  • The manufacturer affixes CE marking on each pressure equipment unit that meets the applicable requirements of the Directive.
  • The manufacturer draws up a written EU Declaration of Conformity for one pressure equipment model and keeps it with the technical documentation for 10 years after placing on the market. The DoC must clearly identify the equipment covered.
  • A copy of the EU Declaration of Conformity is made available to the competent authorities on request.
